Monster Squad

Chaos needs to have foot sloggers too. The idea that all Chaos forces are made up of Deamons, Traitor marines and Spawn is a bit sad. The real cloud and fun in a renegade war band is the mutant and beastmen. These are the lackey's that do all the dirty work, ensuring the plans of the champion come to fruition by blasting who ever is in the way. That great tome of Chaos, Slaves to Darkness has an entry in the 40K war bands followers table that I've been mulling over for years.

The standard answer is to kit bash some fantasy beastmen with cadian arms or something similar but I cracked open the neophytes set and went to town.

Bzzzter

Grumblechops

Fishface
One bits box delve later I had three mutated space bad-asses ready to kick ass and chew your face off.

I then went for some realistic but yucky skin colours on them. Bzzzter got a mauve/blue, Fishface got a normal human skin tone (all the creepier with a face like that) and Grumblechops got a stinky rotten greenish tone.

I see these guys as a well armed special forces squad for a renegade (yet to make his appearance). They act as bodyguards or storm troops, basically the strong arm of the war band. I can use them as part of a war band in an RT game (in which case I may want to add a couple more to the squad) or as a faction in their own right in an Inquisitor game.

I'm pretty happy with the little freaks. Not bad for my first bunch of figures from 2017. Cheers.

  1. Yeah, they look awesome Whiskey :)

Chaos has the most conversion appeal of any racial types in WFB.....the list of possible creations is bloody endless really!

    Top work again!

  2. Those RoC books really continue to provide inspiration for converting/kitbashing decades after they were released. Love what you've created here; I had to Google neophyte and I like what I see... great job on these.

  5. I'm gonna have to kitbash some opponents for these guys.

They look awesome, by the way.

  6. Oh, sweet! I have almost never cared for the GW chaos look. Maybe you've shown me a way to make something prettier, more believable, and more useful to a story. :) GW chaos seems synonymous with grotesque exaggerated cardboard evil, which just feels silly to me. But repressed fishfaced mutants fighting back against a society where they're not only marginalized, but actually hunted like vermin? Now that's awesome! (And so very much more in keeping with the RT spirit, I think.) For chaos to really speak to something I think it needs to be more human. And your lovely little mutants are ever so much more human than a bloated, power armored turducken.

  7. Man, those are great. The kitbashing is really clever and effective, and the paintjob is cracking!

  8. Some of the best kitbashing I've ever seen! And wonderfully painted as well...

  9. Excellent work with the conversions and painting both. Particularly like the "fishface" fellow. When you do more will they be using some of the same heads, or totally random? Seems like either direction has merit.

    1. I do want some more but I tend to be wary of just rushing in. I'll take it easy and wait on a head just popping into my view and demanding a conversion to go with it.

  10. WP, those are flippin sweet. I too wish there'd be more of these types represented in the current version of WH40K story. My own Nurgle Coven for Inquisimunda represents that I think. I need to post them up now they are all painted.

  11. Now I have to resist the urge to go out and buy a bunch of plastic kits
